Course Description:
Music Exploration is designed for everyone who has an interest in music. The course is divided into seven distinct units which make up the core curriculum. Each unit highlights one of the music classes offered in the Ferguson High School music program. No previous musical experience is required. Music history, percussion, guitar, and vocal music are some of the topics covered. By completing the Music Exploration class students will have additional background when they take other music courses at Ferguson High School.
In addition to the core musical curriculum students will participate in a large PBL (project based learning) which makes up 50% of the class. Students have the opportunity to use instruments of their choice, learn sound engineering, and explore many different facets of the music industry. Students' interests guide this portion of the course. While students are not required to play any instruments for the PBL, they are strongly encouraged to. Project Based Learning is a proven educational strategy that increases student engagement and helps students retain knowledge. PBL also encourages problem solving, creative thinking and a whole host of positive learning strategies.
