Course Description:
Music History is taught in two sections, A and B. Section A is broken down into two smaller unist, A1 and A2. Section A1 delves into the literature of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Early Twentieth Century. In Section A1 Students complete a score study of one piece of literature from each major time period and learn about the roots of Blues, Rock n Roll, Jazz, Cuban Rhythms, African Rhythms. Students then do in depth research on the history of music as it pertains to the 1920’s through the mid 1960’s. Each section, A and B, are one quarter units.
Section B is also broken down into two smaller units, B1 and B2. Section B1 delves into the literature of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Early Twentieth Century. In Section B1 Students complete a score study of one piece of literature from each major time periods. Section B allows students to find a relevant historical path to the music they listen to today. Students will be part of a PBL(Project Based Learning) with voice and choice about how they wish to explore modern musics’ roots from the late 1960’s to present day. Students are tasked with creating a tangible public product as a final grade for the unit. Kagan strategies are used through the project to allow for the most appropriate use of time and to allow each student to have their own voice in the project. Students will work with groups assigned from the beginning of the quarter and given team building strategies and exercises to assist in their group work.

- study stylistic development, connections to the other arts and social changes from the 1920’s through present day
- study representative composers, musical styles, and compositions through score study and listening assignments
